Exercise in Style with Yoga Pants

Gone are the days when leotard clad women turned up in droves ready to start practicing their yoga class, today’s yoga enthusiasts are much more stylish since the advent of yoga pants and cropped or fitted tops.

Yoga followers have a fashion all of their own, and the styles are comfortable but attractive to look at. It is not essential for the yoga student to spend out on a variety of clothing specifically for yoga, as comfort is the most important criteria and allowing for the wide range of movements incorporated in any yoga session.

Yoga pants should be loose fitting with plenty of stretch within the fabric, the wearer must feel comfortable at all times, which means that the yoga pants should fit snugly but have plenty of room for movement. Many styles are now made out of a good quality cotton and they come in a wide range of colors to suit everybody’s height, build, weight and mood.

The importance of investing in yoga pants and specifically designed yoga tops is that it can help set the right feeling for practice. Yoga is all about concentrating, about focusing on the individual postures, being one with the movement and relaxing into the pose, and waiting for tension which may be stored up within the muscles to relax and release. This would be difficult to do if the yoga practitioner had concerns about their clothing and felt they were too tight, uncomfortable or they pinched.

Yoga pants especially should be well-fitted around the waist, be careful not to choose those which have the type of elastic waistbands which could curl or ruche up around the middle, similarly allow for freedom of movement when purchasing your outfit, as they should be loose enough to move without restriction.

Color is important as well, different colors can signal different moods and can help you to identify with how you are feeling, it will allow others in the class to intuitively sense how you are during the practice and it can make a statement about you as well.

Whatever clothes you are planning to purchase for your yoga session, remember that they have to feel comfortable on you. Yoga is all about individual progress and style and that must include the clothes you wear to practice in. It isn’t a competition with the postures and neither is it a competition as to who can wear the coveted designer yoga pants.

Having yoga clothes style is about feeling confident, being focused and feeling relaxed and best of all, they don’t just have to be worn for yoga.

The Demanding Intensity of Bikram Yoga

Designed by Bikram Choudry, Bikram yoga consists of 26 postures and 22 breathing exercises. The movements stretch every part of the body including joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. It was developed in California and then brought to Los Angeles, and this then gave it the nickname of ‘hot yoga’ as the postures were performed in a minimum temperature of 40 degrees.

It is fair to say that Bikram yoga differs to the other styles in that it is probably the most demanding and intense style of hatha yoga, however the benefits of studying this style are great. The heat ensures that the body is warmer and more flexible even at the start of the class; this is beneficial as there is less chance of injuries such as pulled muscles. As the body is more flexible, the stretches become more pronounced and so the rewards are greater.

Understandably, when students perform demanding postures in a hot environment, it would be very easy to become dehydrated so it is necessary for students to drink copious amounts of water before and after the session to prevent this from occurring.

Bikram yoga is considered to help correct and improve sleep patterns, promote better digestion, improve cardiovascular functions and metabolism, so it is no wonder that there are dedicated followers to this style.

Having a qualified Bikram yoga teacher on hand to guide and to encourage is always beneficial. As with any other form of yoga, ensuring that the postures are correct is vital. In a class there is usually a mirror so that students can self-correct and perhaps it can be said that correct alignment is more important than reaching advanced positions.

Other benefits include a feeling of walking tall, improved posture, clarity of mind and increased confidence. Attending a class several times a week and then supporting this with yoga practice at home, will enable the student’s progress to be vastly accelerated.

The sequence of movements in Bikram yoga tend to flow and are perfectly balanced to compliment each other, it is then finished with a cleansing and energizing breath called Kapalbhati

The breath is very important in any yoga style but an important tip is to breathe through any difficult postures and learning to recognize negative thoughts, which may also impact your yoga session. The mind can sometimes tighten up at the thought of a difficult or less favorite posture, so by recognizing that this happens and using the breath, the mind can be controlled and the body will then open up to the demands of the posture.

Bikram yoga adds additional dimensions to a usual yoga practice and the feeling is much more intense than in any other style. Some people find the heat and the intensity a problem but others revel in the style and their progress may be much greater than within a usual class and there is always a new challenge for them to strive towards.

Are Meditation Cushions Really Important?

When it comes to meditating, many people feel as if they need meditation cushions while meditating. In fact, many people feel that it is a required item to have while meditating; however, you do not need meditation cushions in order to meditate.

When meditating, a person can meditate on almost any surface, bench or chair. In fact, many times when people to meditate, they will sit on their floors and use the carpet as a cushion. However, there are many people that believe they need special meditation cushions in order to meditate; therefore, they will end up spending a lot of money on a cushion that is specifically made for meditation.

When it comes to choosing meditation cushions, there are many styles, colors and different fabrics to choose from. In fact, no matter where you go you will see at least 3 different styles; whether it is in a magazine or in a yoga shop!

As for the different styles of meditation cushions, some of the most popular styles of them are the basic circles or rectangles; however, the half circles/moon shapes are becoming quite popular as well. Along with the rectangle shaped cushions, there are also square cushions. In all those shapes, they are all available in different sizes (some small ones for those that are smaller and larger cushions for those that are not so small). As for the fabric of the cushions, they are usually made of a cotton material; however, some of them are made from wool. However, one of most popular materials that many meditation cushions are now being made of is buckwheat hull; which is known to be very sturdy. When it comes to buckwheat hull, it is known to be sturdy but yet comfortable enough to give proper support while feeling as if you were sitting in sand!

When purchasing a meditation cushion, not only do you have to choose which style and material you want it to be, but you also have to choose which type of design (if any) you want on it. In fact, some of the basic colors that meditation cushions come in are blue, green, maroon, purple, brown, black and an ivory/crème color; all of which are earth tone colors.

In the end, it does not matter which type of meditation cushion you have or what type of design is on the cushion; especially since when you are meditating your eyes will be closed and you will be focusing on nothing but your breathing or nothing at all! The only purpose of meditation cushions is to help your body with comfort while in the meditation trance.

Yoga Poses for Flexibility and Health

There are numerous yoga poses, which are designed to stretch, tone and limber up all aspects of the yoga enthusiast’s body. All yoga poses have key benefits, which go far deeper than general flexibility; they can massage key organs and improve general health.

The great thing about yoga is that there is no expensive equipment required to practice, all that is required is mental presence of the student and the desire to learn. Although there are many aids available to help them progress through the various yoga poses, an understanding of the benefits of each posture is more useful.

The spine is considered to be the central point of a healthy body; an inflexible and stiff spine greatly inhibits movement and can age a person’s appearance dramatically. All of the organs such as intestines, heart, lungs, liver etc are placed in front of the spine, so it is important that the spine is kept strong and healthy so that it can support the body sufficiently. As such there are numerous yoga poses, which focus on key important areas of the body such as:

Spine

Downward Dog-this pose is excellent for those with rounded shoulders, it is also a marvelous stretch for the backs of the legs.

The Cobra-one of the better-known yoga poses and this improves the backward extension of the spine

The Locust-this is useful for those who suffer with sciatica as it will help to ease the condition

Forward Stretch- helps to strengthen and lengthen the spine in a forward stretching moving, this really helps to protect the spinal discs if done correctly.

Heart and Circulatory System

The Complete Breath- this strengthens the muscles around the heart and improves the capacity of the lungs

The Bridge- this posture is useful for stretching the spine and improving high blood pressure

Neck Pain

The fish Pose-this lengthens the neck and spine but care should be taken with this pose as it is fairly demanding.

The Triangle- Stretches the shoulders and neck releasing tension which may be stored in the upper back. Should not be attempted if the neck area is stiff and painful or if sciatica is present.

Digestive/ Abdominal area

Abdominal lock – to help improve muscles in this region and to help correct or improve conditions such as IBS.

Boat Pose- Excellent posture for strengthening the stomach and correcting digestive conditions.

There are many yoga poses and benefits not listed here, in fact the list is just too numerous, but by incorporating regular and gentle yoga poses into your daily exercise regime, the body will respond by becoming stronger, have greater flexibility, better inward health and clearer mind and increased focus. Allow approximately thirty minutes a day to start feeling the benefits.

Safe Practice with Yoga Mats

In the world of yoga, the yoga mat has become one of the most important equipment aids within the market place. For obvious reasons, safety issues are a real concern and yoga mats are designed not to slip, so extreme postures can be made with the full confidence of the student.

Although not particularly costly, it may be advisable for a student new to the discipline of yoga to purchase a mat initially especially if the plan is to attend a yoga class. Quite often teachers will bring yoga mats with them or there will be available mats through the gym or sports centre where the sessions are held. Although these may not be the best mats in the market place they will enable the student to practice safely and to have support on the joints in the kneeling postures.

The humble yoga mat could be deemed the latest fashion accessory as they come in a variety of colors and textures and have different densities. They also provide traction, which is essential to stop you slipping during some of the postures.

Yoga mats can be used at home or at the class and most come in handy bags and can be rolled up to avoid taking up space. They are lightweight and easy to carry too. Some mats come complete with a pillow, which can be used in some of the postures, should you wish to.

Another important factor to purchasing your own yoga mat is to choose the color, texture and style, which suits your personality and surroundings. It helps to personalize your yoga space, which is important and will help you to practice more diligently.

When your class is almost finished and you lay down for the relaxation section, your mat will protect you from a hard, cold floor so enabling you to benefit from your relaxation session.

Good yoga mats can be obtained from a variety of sources. The internet for example will have the web addresses for possibly thousands of yoga mat suppliers and they can be bought from many retail outlets these days also.

If you are seriously looking for yoga mats, you will find as you begin to look around other items such as belts, exercise balls and blocks which are also available as part of a yoga practice. Iyengar yoga often uses props to help the student achieve greater alignment when the body is not flexible enough to be able to reach the full position. These props are reasonably priced and you may find some special offers enable you to buy a yoga mat quite reasonably when you purchase some other yogic aids at the same time.

Discover Spiritual Growth with Kriya Yoga

May 4, 2011 by AndrewTraub

Many people believe that yoga is all about the physical aspects meaning the body becoming stronger, suppler, and the student being able to deal with stress more efficiently. Of course Hatha yoga which is the more well known of the yoga styles is to a greater extent about improving the body and these are some of the advantages of making yoga part of your life. However, Kriya yoga is an advanced form, which focuses on spiritual growth as opposed to the physical context of yoga.

Typically, the practitioner of any yoga style should have studied any style of yoga for a year or more before embarking on the Kriya yoga route. This is because Kriya yoga is much more complex and requires even greater dedication and understanding of its principles.

Essentially all yoga disciplines teach the student about the inner life force and all yoga postures work at increasing the life force, opening up channels, clearing blockages, balancing inner energies.

The Kriya yoga student focuses on the energy in a different manner and works this energy up and down the spine. Kriya practice is to do with mastery of the breath and the concept is that the student directs this energy to rotate around the spinal centers (medullary, cervical, dorsal, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal plexuses) these spinal centers relate to the twelve signs of the zodiac.

The practice of kriya yoga is very deep and involved and the student must be dedicated to the practice to be able to progress and this is why it is recommended that students will have practiced other yoga methods and styles previously.

The techniques are very powerful and bring inspiration and clarity to the student; it opens up the spiritual eye and magnetizes the body. It takes students a long time to be able to grasp in fully the theory behind the practice and this is one of the reasons why it is important that the student does not self-teach this discipline. There are qualified teachers who should be contacted so as to instill correct techniques into the student; this will then help them to understand all that is Kriya yoga.

Essentially, the student will be able to decarbonize the blood and recharge it with oxygen, and this then rejuvenates all of the spinal centers and the brain. The idea is that the student will have control over the decay of body tissues by using the energy, this internal life-force and the power of their mind.

The student can still carry on with the other elements of yoga such as Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga etc, keeping the body strong is important and will help with the studies towards spiritual growth.

Choosing the Proper Meditation Chair

When it comes to choosing the proper equipment for meditation, it is very important that you feel comfortable with what you have; especially since you are allowing yourself and mind to completely shut down and relax! Therefore, before purchasing any equipment it is best to look thoroughly through all your choices.

As many people are beginning to meditate, more and more people are choosing a meditation chair over any other types of sitting equipment; such as cushions, benches or mats. In fact, the meditation chair is now becoming one of the top selling meditation tools! In order to pick out a great meditation chair, you will want it to have a slight angle that goes forward; as it prevents you from slouching during meditation.

When it comes down to picking out a meditation chair, there are many things that you should take into consideration beforehand. One of the main things that you should think about is whether or not you will be traveling with the meditation chair. If you are, then you will want to think about getting a portable meditation chair. Along with thinking about meditation chairs, you will also want to keep the weight of the meditation chair down to a minimum, as well. Therefore, you will want to choose a chair that is small but yet comfortable; as there are many different styles.

As for the different styles of meditation chairs, there are many to choose from as well as companies that make them. In fact, some of the more popular styles of meditation chairs are portable chairs that are focused on lumbar support, the Rama Warrior Meditation Chair that is made for sitting for long periods at a time, the Zendi meditation chair (which is actually a cushion that is made for easy transportation) and the Seagrass Meditation Chair. Some of the other types of meditation chairs that people like are the Salubrion meditation seat, the backjack chair and the wandering monk meditation chair. There are also a variety of meditation chairs that are used for Zen meditation, yoga, tantric yoga and also for spinal alignment.

One of the best know companies for making great meditation chairs are Zen by Design (which have a large variety of chairs as well as other meditation products to choose from). Along with Zen by Design, there are many other great companies; however, you will have to go through stores to purchase some of their products. Some of the other places that you can go to for meditation chairs are on the internet (as there are many great webpage’s to choose from; which show you the actual product/chair); you can go to different yoga shops as well as through many “natural” stores.

No matter which type of chair you choose, you will want it to fit perfectly for your body; therefore, you will want to try it out before you actually purchase it!

50. Yoga For Children – It’s Not Just For Adults

Why would someone consider paying someone to help their child get exercise? Once upon a time, exercise was the same word used for playing. Children would open their door, head outside and would not show up until dinner time. Games would be played with other children that would involve running, jumping, laughing, and even positive conflict.

However, the world is a different place. It is now filled with fear, anxieties, and other forms of stress. Terms like ADD and ADHD have become standard when describing children. Obesity has risen in children causing an onslaught of childhood disease and general unhealthiness. What is the answer to it all? Perhaps yoga could be the right path for your child.

What Is Yoga?

Many people have their own ideas of what yoga is and all that it involves.
Yoga is a group of Indian spiritual practices that aims at achieving the union with the Supreme Consciousness. There are some yogas that go beyond that and aim at the spiritual transformation of the human nature and obtaining immortality. The Western Hemisphere embraces the physical aspects together with the practice of asanas more than anything (asanas are postures of Hatha Yoga). This is often used as a form of exercise that is good for the body but easy on its joints.

Why Choose Yoga?

What could yoga do for a person? How could they benefit? Well, at its physical level, yoga has been proven extremely beneficial for certain disorders. Further reasons to try this form of alternative health therapy would be:

• Increasing Flexibility – yoga acts on many of the joints of the body. It goes beyond the norm to include those that are not commonly exercised but need to be for achieve full mobility
• Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments, and tendons – The positions practiced also work the ligaments and tendons that help release the necessary lubrication to prevent injury. Natural lubrication is essential to joint and body health and an increase in it is even more beneficial, particularly for a sedentary society of children.
• Organ health – Yoga massages all the organs and stimulates a strong circulatory systems and ample blood supply. These help fight against disease.
• Awareness – Yoga gives children of all ages an introduction to self-awareness and awareness of the self in relation to the earth and to others.
• Complete Detoxification – Multitudinous toxins can accumulate in even the very young. These come from all manner of dietary, medicinal, and environmental pollutants and substances. The increase in circulation and ample blood supplied by yoga practice enhances the detoxification and excretion process, making for healthier, toxin-free children who have more energy and feel better.
• Toning – Yoga is an excellent source of toning for young muscle groups. It works to build muscles, strengthen, and enhance flexibility as it works to correct the problems of inactivity

Is Yoga Really For Children?

The benefits mentioned are for everyone who incorporates yoga into their lives. There are benefits that are specifically designed for children. Some of these benefits include:

• Self-control – The simple breathing and biofeedback techniques that are used slow the nervous system allowing children to develop a sense of self-control and allowing them to connect with their feelings.
• Concentration – The poses and sequences used help release physical and emotional energy that help children concentrate and helps them test better in the learning atmosphere
• Skills – The games and tools used help develop trust, compassion, communication, and teamwork skills
• Relaxation – Storytelling, mental imagery, and music help promote a sense of calmness that allows the imagination to flow
• Wellness – Lessons learned help develop healthy habits around food, exercise, electronic media, and other choices that can affect decisions

When it comes to the children, one should take all aspects into consideration. The children are truly our future and their overall happiness matters for the proper balance of health. When a child is sick then the parent will take them to the doctor, have the necessary prescriptions filled, and follow the doctor’s orders. However, overall health is not just about avoiding illness but the fine balance of physical, mental, social, and emotional wellness, such that yoga can provide.

The Benefits Of Yoga For Women

Women lead such busy lives. There are some that stay at home and take care of their families, there are those who run major corporations, some run their own businesses, others work from home, and some may combine a few of these. This is on top of trying to maintain a modicum of “self,” enjoying friends, and let us not forget sleep. How does anyone expect a woman to fit exercise into an already busy schedule? Besides that exercise sounds like an aspect of taking care of themselves and who has time for that? Everyone else needs her first. Yoga not only fits into that busy schedule but the benefits of yoga definitely outweigh the time it takes.

A Quick Understanding

Yoga is a full practice and lifestyle originating from the Indian culture. There are levels practiced on the physical and mental level that allows for full understanding; some practices even strive to achieve immortality in certain respects. The Western culture has taken certain aspects of yoga and developed practices that are more on the physical level. The physical benefits may include:

• Increasing Flexibility – yoga positions engage a variety of body joints. These include the lesser-used joints that are not regularly exercised (but joints that need to be in order to realize full mobility possibilities).
• Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments, and tendons –Practice also works ligaments and tendons, helping to release much needed lubrication and preventing injury. The results of flexibility are immediate because those that have been worked during regular exercise help those during the practice of yoga, so essentially they work together to achieve the greatest flexibility.
• Massaging organs – Yoga massages the internal organs and by doing so helps fight against disease; this also works as a sort of warning system of impending disease.
• Awareness – Yoga taps into an awareness that is seen in practitioners. People who practice this alternative health therapy are able to have an understanding of their whole body, therefore become a true advocate if something is sensed as wrong.
• Complete Detoxification – By gently massaging the joints, stretching the muscles, and massaging the organs, the body is given an ample supply of blood that allows for the flushing out of toxins throughout the body. This helps prevent premature aging, gives you more energy, and helps you achieve a zest for life.
• Toning – Yoga is an excellent source of toning for your muscle groups. Muscles that have begun to break down and atrophy are stimulated repeatedly removing excess flab and building muscles.

How About Pregnancy?

With all the dos and don’ts of pregnancy, it is hard to understand what can be done. Yoga is truly beneficial during pregnancy, but it is a different form that should be instructed by a trained professional. A patient should discuss the desire to try yoga and get permission from their physician or midwife. Smooth pregnancy and natural childbirth are just some of the benefits of yoga. It does wonders for the mental development of the fetus. There are five vital tools for pregnancy and yoga and when worked together they do wondrous things for your health. The five tools are:

• Yoga Exercises – At a subtle level these supply blood and nutrients to the developing fetus. These exercises gently work your pelvic area to ensure an easier birthing process.
• Breathing- These powerful techniques ensure an abundant supply of oxygen for you and the baby.
• Mudras and Bandhas – The psycho-physical stimulation of these gestures and locks have powerful effects on a woman’s reproductive organs.
• Meditation – This will help you relieve the deepest of fears and conflicts, which are common during pregnancy. This also brings an incredible awareness that helps you connect with your child.
• Deep Relaxation – Yoga Nidra is effective during pregnancy for physical and mental relaxation and also prepares you for childbirth.

Yoga touches on every aspect of your life. It aids in wellness for your mind and body. It is truly understood that the two are deeply connected and exercising those will benefit you greatly.
